The 19th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) is scheduled to take place on the 14th of April,2018.
On the 3rd of March, 2018, ChatterHouse, official organizers of the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards released the nominees’ list for this year’s event of which was the controversial dancehall king, Shatta Wale, Joe Mettle, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie and the late dancehall songstress Ebony reigns who died a few weeks ago.
Mr Bice Osei Kuffour, known popularly as Obour, President of the Musicians Union of Ghana and also a member of the VGMA board that holds the highest percentage in determining the winner, in his speech for the board at the unveiling party, last week said, “‘Artiste Of The Year‘ must be that person who can extend or project his or her music, the scheme to the international market.”
If Obour’s speech for the board is anything to go by then the late dancehall artiste, Ebony’s chances for winning the ‘Artiste Of The Year’ is very limited because she is dead and cannot extend her music or brand to the international market.
In conclusion with regards to the President’s speech, it is clear that the board has already decided on who is to be voted for.
