Rabat – African Football Confederation (CAF) has invited all CAF Member Associations to submit their bid dossier for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations before Friday, December 14.

Following the withdrawal of hosting rights of the Total Africa Cup of Nations 2019 (AFCON) from Cameroon, on November 30, the CAF presented an update on Thursday regarding the approval process for a new host country.

CAF requirements are as follows:

  • Request for Applications to host the AFCON 2019 have now been sent to all CAF Member Associations;
  • Member Associations interested in bidding must submit their bid books to CAF by midnight EET [Cairo time] Friday 14 December;
  • From December 15, 2018, CAF will make a shortlist announcement, request further information from bidders and make possible on-site visits to complete the evaluation of applications;
  • Once the technical evaluation phase has been completed, the CAF Executive Committee will decide the new host of AFCON 2019 which will take place in summer 2019.

CAF will make further statements when appropriate.

Local and international news outlets have been speculating that Morocco might replace Cameroon, althoughSouth Africa might also try and clinch the hosting rights.

Several Moroccan sports officials denied Morocco’s intention to replace Cameroon, repeatedly stating that Morocco supports Cameroon’s bid. But after their failure to get ready in time, Morocco could be a possible option.

The head coach of Morocco’s national football team, Herve Renard, has publicly stated that he believes that Morocco meets all the requirements to host the African event.
