Jadon Sancho “didn’t want to take this challenge” of breaking through at Manchester City, according to Pep Guardiola.

Sancho spent just two years at City before leaving for Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

His development in Germany has been startling, with the 18-year-old establishing himself as a first-team regular in both the Bundesliga and Champions League.

Such opportunities felt like a distant dream for Sancho at City, and Guardiola says the winger opted to try his luck elsewhere instead.

“He didn’t want to take this challenge, this opportunity to discover if he was able to,” Guardiola said.

“He decided to go there. So it’s perfect. It’s going well and congratulations on what he is doing.

“He is doing an incredible performance. He did incredibly well this season. What would have happened this season (at City)? I don’t know.

“With the players, it depends on them and what they do on the pitch.”
