MAKURDI – The Benue state command of the Nigeria Police have arrested about thirty suspected criminals in various raids across Makurdi, the state capital.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, Sewuese Anene who disclosed this while speaking with DAILY INDEPENDENT in Makurdi on Thursday said those arrested include five cult members.
She explained that the cult members were arrested at their hideout, shortly after they raided a beer parlour in Makurdi on Wednesday night.
According to the PPRO, the cultists had arrived the beer parlour at about 9:pm on Wednesday, shots warning shots in the air to scare people around and robbed some victims of valuable items.
Anene explained that shortly after the cultists departed the scene, the police identified and raided their hideout, where five of the cultists with various tattoos of the confraternity they belonged to were arrested.
Also recovered in their possession were ladies’ handbags and purses, containing ladies’ items among others.
She stated that they were currently undergoing interrogation and would soon be charged to court.
The state police spokesperson also said that the police in other raids across the city picked up twenty four suspected criminals.
She noted that after a careful screening of the suspects, most of whom were arrested around Wurukum roundabout, the command has charged fourteen of them to courts.
Anene informed that those that were found to be travelers who happened to be around the vicinity during the raid have been released.
She warned that the state command of the Nigeria police has decided to go tough on criminals and there was no hiding place for criminals in the state.
