 The largest annual African fashion event in Europe was held on 9th- 10th August in London this weekend and the 9th Edition of AFWL overtook expectations!

Again at the prestigious Freemasons’ Hall for two full days of catwalk shows and exhibition shopping floors in the beautiful Grand Temple venue space, Africa Fashion Week London hosted over 100 designers who flew in from different parts of the globe to showcase the best of African fashion in London.

Founded in 2011 by Princess Ronke Ademiluyi, Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) is now Europe’s largest annual fashion event promoting and nurturing African and African-inspired design talent. For the past 9 years AFWL has consistently employed over 50 BAME catwalk models every year.  They also further employ over 100 young people every year who work with as volunteers for backstage runners, dressers, hair & makeup teams, front of house, and administration – giving them vital skills in event management and catwalk and exhibition production.

ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS

  • Showcased over 900 designers and exhibitors from Africa and the global diaspora
  • Over 70,000 visitors at AFWL
  • Represented designers from 27 African countries and a further 20 African-inspired designers from countries outside the Continent, including  France, Holland, USA, Brazil, China, the Caribbean, and, of course, the United Kingdom.

This year’s edition featured unmissable runway showcases featuring collections from theKwa-Zulu Natal Trade & Industry (TIKZN)and a special Celebrity Catwalk show featuring the legendary bassist and front-woman of The Noisettes, @Shingai that had stars such as @comeddiekadi, @samson_soboye, @vanrdda_gounden, @ilemorem, @mamayets, @kelechifc and @smade.
