Xenophobia: Angry Youths Invade MTN Office In A’Ibom, Destroy Properties  Worth N5m


Uyo – In continued reaction to the xenophobia in South African, some angry youths in Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday invaded the MTN office in Uyo, destroying properties worth N5 million.

A Sales Representative at MTN, Mr. Idongesit Nkereuwem who spoke with our correspondent who visited the scene mentioned properties destroyed by the angry youths to include: Computers, Staff phones, customers phones, windows, glasses and money among others.

Nkereuwem said that the youths came with cutlasses, axes, sticks and other weapons to vandalised the offices across the state.

His words “The irate youths ordered people out of the office while they destroyed computers, stole money and customers phones but nobody was injured during the incident.

Reacting to the attack, the State Police Public Relations Officers, SP Odiko Mac-Don said the police command had intervened in an attack on MTN office in Uyo by some aggrieved youths.

Mac-Don stated that the Commissioner of Police had ordered a beef-up of security in Uyo.

“However, the police command is still monitoring activities around the state. The Commissioner of Police has ordered that they beef up security in all parts of the state.

“In as much as we condemn in totality the actions of South Africans against Nigerians, however, we, Akwa Ibom people are peace-loving and we are not willing to take up any form of arms but we discourage and condemn the actions of South Africans against Nigerians,” he said.
