Former Isiolo Woman Representative Tiyah Galgalo on Tuesday dramatically survived an attempt to quash her nomination to the National Lands Commission (NLC) over non-tax compliance.

Days and nights of intense lobbying and high level intervention appear to have saved the former Isiolo woman representative.

A total of 114 members voted supporting an amendment to the National Assembly Lands committee’s report that had recommended the rejection of Galgalo’s nomination over alleged non-compliance on tax matters.

Seventy lawmakers supported the quashing of her nomination.

Galgalo’s survival on the floor of the house was as dramatic as the intrigues that preceded the plenary sitting.

KRA’s commissioner in-charge of domestic taxes Elizabeth Meyo had written to National Assembly clerk Michael Sialai, confirming Galgalo’s compliance, days after KRA Commissioner General James Githii Mburu told the lands committee that Galgalo had obtained a tax compliance certificate fraudulently.

Sources disclosed that KRA top bosses yielded to pressure from high offices to save Galgalo, who is allied to the ‘Embrace Kenya’ movement that supports the pact between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, popularly known as the handshake.

Other members of the commission who cleared the parliamentary hurdle and now await appointment by the president are Mr. Gershom Otachi (Chairman), Ms. Esther Murugi, Prof. James Tuitoek, Ms. Gertrude Nguku, Mr. Reginald Okumu, Mr. Kazungu Kambi, Ms. Hubbie Al-Haji and Mr. Alister Mutugi.
