Moroccan Athlete Soufiane El Bakkali Qualifies for 3000m Steeple Race

Rabat – Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali secured a place at the final of the 3000-meter steeple at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar from September 27 to October 6.

The 23-year old athlete won a place in the final race against international athletes. 

The Moroccan athlete came second with a time of  8 munites and 17 seconds, just behind Ethiopian Lamecha Girma.

Bakkali is one of the 17 athletes representing Morocco in the IAAF competition.

On August 25, El Bakkali astonished Moroccan fans after he won Paris Diamond League’s 3000m steeplechase despite injuries he sustained during the race.

The race included hurdles and water jumps.

Footages showed El Bakkali with blood on his shoes. The injuries, however, did not stop him from being the first to cross the finish line.

In 2016, El Bakkali represented Morocco at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, coming 4th in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, his specialty.

He placed first in the steeplechase at the Mediterranean Games held in Spain in 2018 and 2nd in the African Championships in Nigeria.

He also won the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase championship in Monaco in July 2019.
