Six elephants on Saturday reportedly fell to their deaths while trying to save each other from a waterfall in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand.

According to BBC, park officials confirmed the incident saying it occurred after a baby elephant slipped and fell over the waterfall commonly known as Haew Narok (Hell’s Fall).

The bodies of five other elephants were later discovered nearby, having also fallen over while trying to save the calf and subsequently each other.

The national park boss Khanchit Srinoppawan reportedly told the British broadcaster that two other elephants that were found struggling on a cliff edge nearby have since been rescued.

The pair is now being monitored by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.
