Rabat – Chinese multinational technology company Huawei has announced it is ready to launch a 5G network in Morocco.

The company’s vice-president for North Africa, Philippe Wang, announced the news on Monday, January 20, in Beijing.

Morocco is still operating with a 4G network. The Global Connectivity Index (GCI) for 2019 published by technology company Huawei ranked Morocco third in Africa for 4G coverage, behind South Africa and Egypt

Wang extolled Morocco’s political stability and advanced infrastructure during a meeting with a Moroccan delegation who were visiting a Huawei service center.

Morocco has several strengths that can be used to turn the country into a hub for Africa’s digital sector.

The expert finds that Morocco should increase efforts to encourage foreign direct investments in the technology sector and speed up digital transformation in the industry.

“Morocco must also further promote trade and partnerships with regional economics,” said the Huawei personnel.

Huawei has been operating in Morocco since 1999 and has headquarters in Rabat. The company also opened another regional headquarters in Casablanca in 2018, which also covers the firm’s operations in North Africa.

The Chinese company said that it maintains active cooperation with Moroccan partners, including telecommunication companies.

The company cited the three giant companies, Maroc Telecom, Inwi, and Orange.

Huawei has several agreements with Moroccan universities to train 12,000 students over a period of three years.

The firm has also partnered with key companies, such as the National Railway Office (ONCF). Huawei provides ONCF with the technologies necessary for high-speed-line or LGV communication services.

Wang said, the group is “very proud to have participated in this great project.”

Moroccan ambassador to China Aziz Mekouar was part of the Moroccan delegation at the meeting.

The visit comes as part of China and Morocco’s determination to boost cooperation in several sectors, including fisheries.

Morocco and China are celebrating the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year.
