South Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation issued a statement welcoming the agreement between the government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to end the deadly conflict and promised to support the parties in its implementation.
The Ethiopian foes agreed to permanently end hostilities, in a significant step toward ending the grinding war that has seen thousands of people killed, millions displaced, and millions more left in urgent need of food assistance.
The statement read:
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation takes this opportunity to congratulate the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front on signing the historic ‘Agreement for Lasting Peace through a Permeant Cessation of Hostilities.
“This agreement signifies a momentous step towards peace and highlights, firstly to all Ethiopian people, that their leadership is concerned with their safety and prosperity. Secondly, it demonstrates a commitment to peace and stability, for all those in the region.”
The statement further commended the parties in their agreement and said the deal, between the two parties showcase an African ability to the world that they can sit and discuss their issues without the need to look up to others.
The statement added:
“Finally, it showcases to the rest of the world how the capacity for reconciliation makes a way for a lasting peace. The permeant cessation of hostilities will equally foster the right environment in making continued steps towards the African Union vision for 2030.
“The government and people of South Sudan celebrate this historic agreement and stand with the signatories in working to ensure that the horn of Africa region is a peaceful and prosperous region for all.”
