The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos Chapter has stated that workers’ salaries have lost their value and have become more meaningless due to inflation in the country.
The union also expressed concern over threats to workers and incessant layoffs. The NLC Lagos Chapter charged the federal government to use the $800 million recently received from the World Bank to fix the refineries. Agnes Sessi, Chairman of the NLC Lagos State, made this call during the Workers’ Day celebration at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
The event was attended by Lagos State Deputy Governor, Babafemi Hamzat, Lagos State Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour and Industrial Relations, Babatunde Williams, and others.
Hamzat, who represented the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, thanked workers for their support during the last elections and promised to ensure prompt payment of salaries and emoluments, better working conditions, and the provision of necessary tools.
Adeleye Ajayi, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Chapter, also urged an upward review of workers’ salaries, calling for the reintroduction of the Media Enhancement Bill that was previously before the National Assembly.
In a related development, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, Commandant-General (CG) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has urged personnel in all formations not to relent in carrying out the mandates of the Corps effectively, promising to continue to initiate policies and programmes that will benefit members of staff, improve their welfare and conditions of service.
Furthermore, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has called on workers to key into the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of Bola Tinubu government.
Obasa charged civil servants in Lagos State to continue to support the three arms of the state government, which have remained purposeful and constantly catered for their welfare.
He commended Nigerian workers for their passion, resilience, and goal-oriented spirit and urged them to renew their hope and synergize with the incoming administration’s agenda.
