Cholera Outbreak Claims 99 Lives in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has witnessed the tragic loss of 99 lives due to confirmed and suspected cases of cholera in the past two days, with reports suggesting that two additional individuals may have succumbed to the waterborne disease.

According to a situational report issued by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, 63 patients are currently receiving treatment in various healthcare facilities across the country.

The report highlights 17 districts as cholera hotspots, namely Buhera, Chegutu, Chikomba, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Chiredzi, Harare, Gokwe North, Marondera, Mazowe, Shamva, Mutare, Murehwa, Mwenezi, Seke, and Wedza.

“The first cholera outbreak in the country in 2023 began on February 12th in Chegutu. As of Saturday, there have been a total of 2,338 suspected cholera cases, 16 laboratory-confirmed deaths, 42 suspected cholera deaths, and 568 laboratory-confirmed cases reported,” the report stated.
