The interim coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons Justin Madugu has explained the reason for the absence of the defender Ashleigh Plumptre from the team.

The Al Ittihad defender is one of the key players of the team that has been absent since the end of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

During a pre-match conference organised for the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations qualifier against Cape Verde, Madugu made it clear that injury is one of the reasons Plumptre is out of the team.

“Ashleigh (Plumptre) has been having a lot of injuries. She has been carrying some knocks and she has not fully recovered, that’s just the truth about it.

“She needed some rest, the break from the national team engagements so that she can recover fully. But she’s still part of the team.

“When she’s fully recovered, certainly we know what Ashleigh can bring to bear. She will be part of the team going forward”, he said.
