NAIROBI, Kenya Oct 1 – The National Assembly has set Tuesday next week to hear and determine impeachment charges against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaker Moses Wetangula said Gachagua can choose to defend himself during the session or send his legal representative.

Ahead of the hearing, the National Assembly will conduct public participation from all the 47 counties on Friday.

“We will hold a morning session on Tuesday October 8, and commence an early afternoon sitting on the same day to consider the special motion. I will also interrupt Wednesday morning sitting and at noon for the briefing of the House on the manner of undertaking public participation,” added the Speaker.

The House will then accord DP Gachagua a chance to be heard either in person or through legal representation or both.

“Noting that the motion will be considered on October 8, I have directed that the Deputy President be notified of his right to appear on the said date from 5pm to 7pm,” the speaker stated.

Funyula MP Oundo Ojiambo urged the House to adjudicate the impeachment motion with utmost fairness saying it will be an exercise in futility without such consideration.

“I do hope that you will apply yourself and guide us adequately, so that the decision we make at the end of the proceedings is not invalidated on account of unfair treatment of the accused,” he said.

Speaker Wetangula denied claims that he is biased in steering the House in the prosecution of the impeachment motion.

“I am not conflicted in any way, I have no vote in this matter, I have no dog in this fight and I can assure you the proceedings will proceed in accordance with fairness, the law, the Constitution and rules of natural justice,” the Speaker said.
