Dutch club FC Twente has been hit with a substantial penalty of €83,125 by UEFA following incidents of racist and discriminatory behavior by their fans during a Europa League match against Lazio.
The sanctions were imposed after an investigation confirmed that supporters directed racist chants at Lazio players, including Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and teammate Loum Tchaouna.
The troubling incidents took place during Twente’s 2-0 loss to Lazio at the Grolsch Veste stadium.
UEFA’s investigation found clear evidence of racist chants originating from the Vak-P stand, prompting the governing body to take decisive action against the club.
In addition to the fines, UEFA has mandated that part of Twente’s stadium will be closed for their upcoming home match against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on November 28.
The club has expressed profound disappointment over the situation, condemning such behavior as unacceptable and contrary to the values they uphold.
In a statement on their official website, FC Twente pledged to identify and punish those responsible for the racist behavior, indicating their intent to recover the imposed fines from the perpetrators.
The club also announced that individuals identified as having thrown drinking cups onto the field would face stadium bans.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who contributed an assist in Lazio’s victory, has made a notable impact in the Europa League this season, having previously scored and assisted on his debut against Dynamo Kiev.
His performances continue to highlight his talent in the competition.
