Arsenal are considering Dominik Szoboszlai as a possible alternative to Houssem Aouar after ‘following’ him for ‘years’

Desperately needed

On Fabrizio Romano’s ‘Here We Go’ podcast, the Italian journalist revealed that Arsenal have been ‘following’ Dominik Szoboszlai for ‘years.’ Arsenal were looking to bring in an attacking midfielder in the summer but were unable to reach an agreement with Lyon for Houssem Aouar.

According to Romano, Arsenal looked to have switched targets to the Red Bull Salzburg 20-year-old. 101 Great Goals have profiled the Hungarian (find out more here) and the 20-year-old could provide the additional creativity and goals the Gunners have been crying out for in midfield.

Arsenal have become much better defensively under Mikel Arteta. Displaying their resolute style at Old Trafford against Manchester United in a  1-0 win.

However, against Leicester City, the Gunners looked devoid of creativity, lacking variety in their chance creation. Eventually succumbing to a 1-0 defeat it was clear that until January, chance creation could be a difficulty.

In the 12 competitive fixtures for Salzburg this season, the Hungarian has 5 goals and 8 assists. Whilst many have come from set pieces, this is also an area Arsenal need to improve in. Corners specifically have struggled to beat the first man or sail past the back post.

Situation Szoboszlai

Fabrizio Romano spoke about how Houssem Aouar is still keen on a move to England despite the fact the move to Arsenal failed.

“He’s in love with the Premier League, so let’s see what Arsenal will decide. What I’m told is that Arsenal are looking to sign this kind of player. They were looking [at] Aouar, they are now considering the situation of Szoboszlai.”

“The situation is that Arsenal [have been] following Szoboszlai [for] years. So, let’s see what will happen next summer or January, but Arsenal are following the player.”

The situation in regards to price could also be favourable for the Gunners. Whilst it was reported that Lyon were demanding a significant fee for the Frenchman, Szoboszlai looks much less.

Reportedly, the Hungarian has a release clause of around €25 million. A figure lower than the supposed initial bid for Aoaur, whether the purchase of Thomas Partey has affected Arsenal’s financial capacity for January is yet to be seen.
