Arsenal understood to have paid Mesut Ozil a loyalty bonus worth around £8m in September

Ozil out in the cold

Since signing his latest contract in January of 2018, Mesut Ozil’s Arsenal career has taken something of a nosedive.

The German’s displays, whether due to his own attitude or the manager’s he has played under, have simply been nowhere near good enough.

This would lead to months and months of Ozil floating in and out of the Gunners’ starting line-up.

However, when Mikel Arteta first took the reins at Arsenal, Ozil was actually afforded a decent run in the side.

In fact, the former Real Madrid standout managed to feature in Arteta’s first 10 Premier League games as Arsenal boss.

But the league was, of course, postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and since it has returned, Ozil has fallen heavily out of favour.

Arteta has not come out and provided an explanation for the sudden axing of Ozil, though the player himself has speculated that it may be due to him refusing to take a pay-cut earlier this year.

Ozil receives an £8m bonus

Whatever the reason may be, the fact remains that Ozil has not played a competitive minute for Arsenal since the 7th of March.

Ozil has also recently been left out of Arsenal’s latest Europa League squad.

And as of just a few days ago, Arsenal had paid out just shy of £11m to the midfielder in wages since his latest appearance – a stat which will no doubt displease many of the Arsenal faithful.

Arsenal fans will probably be even more aggrieved to learn that Arsenal are understood to have paid Ozil around £8m last month.

The reason for this, according to The Athletic, was because of a loyalty bonus that was inserted into Ozil’s last contract back in 2018.
