Arsenal’s Thomas Partey given 3/10 for his performance vs Mali but still scored second highest on his team

The fateful twist

It seems almost cruel scheduling an international break on the week the transfer window slams shut. Whilst players moved, fans remained glued to their TV screens and devices refreshing and scrolling to find the latest news.

Arsenal fans in particular were treated to a pulsating Transfer Deadline Day. The morning brought with it little hope, outlets such as the Athletic reported that it would take a major twist for Arsenal to pull off something big. But an almighty twist is exactly what would occur.

Suddenly, news began to break that the Gunners were pushing hard to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey. The activation of his release clause would mean no negotiation with Atleti would be necessary.

It took until the late hours of Monday evening for the news to officially break but Arsenal had done it. Partey was a Gunner and the countdown to his first appearance had begun.

But fans would need to add an additional week with players to fly to meet up with their national teams ahead of friendly fixtures and qualifiers.

Ghana played Mali in an international friendly with many Ghanaian stars such as Partey playing. Both Jordan and Andre Ayew featured up top, with Brentford’s Tariqe Fosu and Besiktas’ Bernard Mensah also selected.

Despite the talent on show, Mali dominated the game and came away 3-0 winners. RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara capped off the night with a curling effort past the Ghanaian keeper after his first effort had struck the post and returned to him.

Arsenal’s Partey was given a score of 3 and still managed to be the side’s second-best player. Typically fielded for Atleti in a deeper and more disciplined position, Partey’s role was further forward for his county.

Some nations field typically deeper players in more attacking roles when they are a standout amongst other abilities.

Austria’s David Alaba, typically a more defensive player for Bayern Munich, saw much of his early career in midfield. Tim Cahill, a midfielder in the Premier League, was often fielded as a centre-forward for the Australian national team.

Arsenal fans should not be too concerned. Judgement will be held for his inclusion in Arteta’s side.

Arsenal face Manchester City away from home at 17:30 on Saturday 17th October.
