Barcelona presidential candidate believes Lionel Messi situation is reversible

Messi’s Barcelona situation

The transfer saga of this past summer, of course, surrounded Lionel Messi.

The Argentine, on the back of another disappointing Champions League campaign, set his sights on departing Barcelona by making use of a clause in his contract.

However, following weeks of speculation and talks, the legendary attacker eventually announced that he was set to stay at the Camp Nou for the 2020/21 season.

As we approach the midway point of the campaign, though, Messi’s future remains up in the air.

The veteran Argentine is primed to enter the final six months of his Barca contract, with no news of a possible extension having yet been forthcoming.

The forward himself has also recently suggested he would open to playing in the MLS.

Joan Laporta on Messi’s situation

Such comments will no doubt cause concern for the Barca faithful, who will likely dread thinking about where their club would be without the 33-year-old.

However, there are still seemingly still some who believe all hope it not lost for Messi at the Camp Nou.

One of those individuals is Joan Laporta, who is running to become Barcelona president for a second time.

Laporta has already been quite active in his campaigning, which has involved putting up a huge billboard of himself in Madrid, the home of Barca’s closest rivals:

And now Laporta has expressed his opinion that Messi’s situation is reversible:

“They are two things that are the result of poor management. The situation has worsened with Covid, but mismanagement is part of and is the origin of this consequence; having Leo like this.

“The two things are reversible. The situation of the club is reversible and the Leo issue, I hope too.

“I think the most important thing is that Leo said he will wait for a new president to decide and, therefore, he would be willing to listen to Barca’s proposal.

“They told me they would wait until the end of the season. I like to stay with the positive and I think that is very positive.”
