Benfica are reportedly keen to recall Gedson Fernandes from his loan with Spurs after the Portuguese midfielder has failed to integrate in Mourinho’s side.
Benfica want Fernandes back
Gedson Fernandes is reportedly wanted by Benfica to return early from his loan deal with Tottenham Hotspur. The Portuguese midfielder joined the North London club in January of 2020 on an 18-month loan deal with an option to purchase for around €50 million.
However, according to Sky Sports News, the Portuguese side now wish to recall the youngster from his loan prematurely considering he is not playing for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Tottenham purchased Emile-Pierre Hojbjerg from Southampton in the summer and there has been no room for Fernandes with the impressive performances of the Dane alongside Frenchman Moussa Sissoko. Tanguy Ndombele has also re-emerged as a quality option for Mourinho, who originally had omitted the Frenchman from his plans.

Benfica are currently third in the Liga NOS table behind Porto and Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese giants also face a tough test in the Europa League against Arsenal and will want to strengthen where possible.
An ulterior motive for Spurs to release Fernandes would be that the club are also hoping to win the Europa League themselves and by strengthening their North London rivals’ opponents this may prove favourable as an option.
Mourinho open to Fernandes departure
Mourinho himself has been completely open and honest about the possibility of Fernandes leaving the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the January window. The likelihood of the club paying a significant fee for his signature permanently in the summer considering how little he has played is exceptionally unlikely.
With other players under contract such as Dele Alli and Harry Winks who are also not earning regular minutes, it would make little sense for the club to sanction such an outlay for a periphery player.
“The situation is sad because he was out of the Europa League list,” Mourinho said ahead of Spurs’ match with Leicester City which they lost 2-0.

“By being out of that list reduced immediately a chance of nine matches that we already played in the Europa League, where we had five substitutions where we rotated the players a lot and we can bring to the bench 12 players.”
“To be out of these nine matches I believe that breaks confidence levels and even dynamics and routines and was very bad for him. If he remains at the club from January, I cannot answer you. I truly believe that we have to respect the player and Benfica. The player because he deserves all our respect and Benfica because as a friendly club deserves our respect.”
It is likely the news will be discovered in the coming days as to the future of Fernandes.
