Cavani & Pellistri both convinced of Man United moves by former Red Devils stars

An insight into the motivation behind a pair of Manchester United’s summer additions’ decisions to make the move to Old Trafford has been forthcoming on Friday.

Reds reinforcing

As was widely documented in the media, transfer deadline day proved rather hectic on the red half of Manchester.

On the back of a quiet summer, during which the Red Devils had clinched just a solitary signing, a further 4 players followed suit during the final hours of the window.

First up was left-back Alex Telles, who arrived from Porto in a deal worth a reported £15 million.

This was followed by confirmation that both youngster Amad Diallo and free agent Edinson Cavani had also committed to terms with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

And last was Uruguayan starlet Facundo Pellistri, who, according to Penarol secretary Evaristo Gonzalez, is set for an immediate integration into the first-team setup at Old Trafford.

‘After talking with Ander…’

Whilst, in the end, Ed Woodward and co. managed to push the aforementioned quartet of deadline day deals over the line, though, had it not been for the influence of a pair of former Manchester United stars, it is possible that neither Cavani nor Pellistri would have joined.

Speaking in an interview with the Red Devils’ official website on Friday, veteran hitman Cavani was drawn on his decision to make the move to Manchester, with a particular emphasis on a conversation held with Ander Herrera.

Midfielder Herrera was the Uruguayan’s teammate at PSG, and of course lined out at Old Trafford for 5 years from 2014 to 2019.

And Cavani has confirmed that, with the deadline fast approaching, the glowing endorsement of his ex-colleague eventually proved telling in persuading him to give his word to United:

‘I spoke with Ander a lot, as well as other team-mates, like Angel Di Maria, who I was also with at Paris. It was genuinely getting to the last minute and I called Ander to have a chat.’

‘I have a lot of admiration for Ander, for the kind of person he is, and I had the feeling that his words were going to help me out, by telling me a bit about what it was like at United. So yes, it’s true that after I’d finished talking with Ander, we came to an agreement here with the club.’

Coincidentally, this comes on the same day on which similar claims have emerged surrounding Facundo Pellistri’s decision to take his talents to the Premier League.

18-year-old Pellistri came as something of a surprise reinforcement to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, with the prodigious wide-man having previously been plying his trade in his home country with Penarol.

As per a report from ESPN, though, it was actually the advice of another former Manchester United star which convinced Pellistri of a Reds switch.

The individual in question? Diego Forlan.

Ex-United striker Forlan oversaw Pellistri’s development during a brief spell in charge of Penarol, and, after discovering that his fellow countryman was inching towards a move to France with Lyon, advised the youngster to opt for Old Trafford instead.

This, in the end, is said to have proven key to Pellistri’s decision over his future.
