Chelsea defender Reece James withdraws from England under-21 squad after reportedly suffering injury in training

Chelsea appear to have been handed an injury blow ahead less than two weeks away from the Premier League campaign kicking off.

Brighton vs Chelsea

The English top-flight, of course, returns to our screens on September 12th after a less than two-month hiatus.

Chelsea, though, are one of the final sides to return to Premier League action in September.

The Blues will travel to the Amex to face Brighton on Monday the 14th.

Chelsea have a pretty solid record against the Seagulls, having not lost to them since 1933.

James out of England under-21 squad

With just under two weeks till Chelsea are back in action, though, they do look to have a number of fitness concerns.

Frank Lampard and his side returned to training recently, but as we covered last week, six first-team players – believed to be Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic, Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Emerson and Michy Batshuayi – were all in coronavirus quarantine and, obviously, couldn’t train with the rest of the squad.

New signing Hakim Ziyech then picked up a knock during Chelsea’s first pre-season game over the weekend, with Lampard confirming the midfielder had a knock on his knee and needed to be assessed.

Now, as mentioned above, Chelsea appear to have been handed another blow on the personal front on Wednesday.

England would confirm that Chelsea right-back Reece James has pulled out of their latest under-21 squad.

England did not specify if James was injured, but football.london have since reported that the 20-year-old suffered an injury in training with England.
