Chelsea table improved bid of €20 million for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

Chelsea’s shaky defence

One of Chelsea’s biggest problems in 2019/20 was, of course, their defensive record.

When the curtain fell on the latest Premier League season, the Blues had allowed the most goals of the top-10 clubs.

And whilst one man can’t be solely blamed for such a dismal record, the performances of Kepa’s certainly didn’t help.

Chelsea signed Kepa in the summer of 2018 for £71m, making the Spaniard the most expensive goalkeeper in world football.

The shot-stopper’s debut season in England wasn’t terrible, but he was by no means the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Then, this past term, Kepa’s form took a complete nosedive.

The 25-year-old was so poor, in fact, that Frank Lampard opted to drop him during two separate spells, the second of which saw Willy Caballero handed a starting berth in a number of league games, the FA Cup final, and the Blues’ Champions League clash with Bayern Munich this month.

Kepa is also believed to have finished the Premier League season with the worst save percentage of any goalkeeper.

Such poor form has, understandably, led to speculation that Frank Lampard wants to move the former Athletic Bilbao man on this summer, or at least sign another keeper as competition.

Chelsea bid for Mendy

One man who appears to have piqued the interest of those in a position of power at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile, is Rennes goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy.

The 28-year-old joined Rennes last summer for just over £3.5m, and went on to enjoy a superb debut campaign.

Granted, the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season was cut short, but Mendy still played a key role in Rennes’ boasting of the joint-best defensive record in the French top-flight, alongside champions PSG.

Such exploits, in turn, have seemingly impressed Chelsea, with it claimed earlier this week that the Londoners had seen a bid worth £15 million rejected for the Frenchman.

The Blues, though, are already said to have returned with a fresh proposal.

As per a recent report from Goal, Chelsea have tabled an improved bid of €20 million (around £18m) for Mendy.
