Conflicting reports suggest Kevin de Bruyne is ‘not close’ to new contract

De Bruyne contract

It was reported yesterday that the feeling around the Manchester City camp was that a deal for Kevin de Bruyne to sign a new long-term contract at the club was ‘very close.’ Reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Belgian international looked to be just weeks, possibly days, away from a contract being agreed.

“Negotiations between Manchester City and Kevin de Bruyne [himself, no agent involved] on a new contract are going on in the right direction. The feeling around the club is that the agreement is ‘very close,’” said Romano.

Manchester City would have been hoping to conclude a deal for De Bruyne as soon as possible. His current deal is set to expire in 2023, and with the deal continually nearing its expiration the Belgian’s value will only decrease with it.

The club will not want to enter a similar situation to Barcelona who face the prospect of losing Lionel Messi for free at the end of the season when the Argentine’s deal expires.

Deal ‘not close’

However, Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur today published information regarding the contract situation of De Bruyne. It appears that the situation is nowhere near as conclusive as previous reports indicated.

Terreur reports that the deal which Manchester City have offered to the Belgian international is not of the required terms for the 29-year-old to sign.

“Negotiations between Kevin De Bruyne and Man City are not in an advanced stage (as yet). He’s not close to signing a new contract as there hasn’t been a lot of progress. There’s a proposal on the table, but the player won’t sign a deal at those terms,” reported Terreur.

It appears we may be waiting sometime until any official confirmation on a possible new contract does come to light. The good news for Manchester City is that, as reported by Terreur, De Bruyne is not allowing the the situation to affect his game and therefore will continue to play with the the commitment he has always shown whilst playing for the Citizens.
