Dier believes Dele Alli will fight for Tottenham spot: ‘We all know his quality’

Alli out in the cold

Dele Alli endured a rather poor 2019/20 campaign, which saw him struggle to recapture the form he once displayed for both England and Tottenham.

This season, meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has very much opted to take the tough love approach with the midfielder.

Alli started Spurs’ opening league game of the season vs Everton, but was hooked at half-time as the Lilywhites went on to lose 1-0.

The 24-year-old has since been afforded just 21 minutes of Premier League action – coming off the bench vs Manchester United with the result already secured.

Alli hasn’t even featured too regularly in Europe, garnering 45 minutes of action vs Antwerp, before being taken off at half-time once again. The week prior, vs LASK, he was afforded just 28 minutes on the pitch.

Dier backs Alli to fight for Tottenham place

With Alli clearly out of favour under Mourinho, a transfer was, inevitably, heavily touted during the summer.

However, no move, in the end, materialised, with Mourinho having subsequently revealed his hope that Alli can go on to follow in the footsteps of Tanguy Ndombele.

The Frenchman was afforded similar treatment last season, but has since established himself as a key member of Mourinho’s squad.

As such, with Alli facing the mammoth task of winning back Mourinho’s favour, Eric Dier has spoken out in support of his teammate, revealing his belief that the attacking midfielder is ready to fight for his place at Tottenham:

“Dele has the capacity, we all know his quality, we all know what he brings, he’s shown that in the past.

“It’s really up to him to put in the work, the effort, the commitment and I’m sure he will do that.

“That’s who he is, he’s always had that drive. It’s up to him, it’s in his hands and it’s in all of our hands.

“Individually, we all have to perform, we’ve got a very big squad and we all have to perform at the highest level if we want to play.”
