Egypt announces murder of Egyptian teacher in Riyadh

The Egyptian government confirmed the killing of Egyptian teacher Hany Abdel Tawab in Saudi Arabia last week.

Egypt’s Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Nabila Makram issued a statement on the crime expressing her condolences to Tawab’s family.

Makram confirmed that “Investigations into the incident will be pursued in coordination with the Egyptian embassy in Riyadh, as well as coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation to expedite the return of the deceased’s body to the homeland at the request of his family, in accordance with specific flight dates from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Egypt at the time.”

The Egyptian minister stressed confidence in the Saudi judiciary and that the perpetrators will receive penalty in accordance with the laws governing Saudi Arabia.

Abdel Tawab, a 35-year-old English teacher in middle school was shot by one of his students and died in the halls of intensive care unit at a hospital in Riyadh.

Egypt’s Al-Watan newspaper quoted a friend of the late teacher saying that the incident occurred following an altercation between Abdel Tawab and a 13-year-old student during class.

The student and his 16-year-old brother then accosted Tawab and shot him, dumping him at the al-Slail Hospital in Riyadh before fleeing.
