Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa ‘completed’/David Raya & Alex Rúnarsson amongst names tipped to replace Argentine at Arsenal

Emiliano Martinez’s Arsenal exit appears to be all but confirmed.

Martinez set for Villa

The Argentine’s future has, of course, been called into question of late, after Martinez made clear that he would only be willing to remain at the Emirates if guaranteed a regular spot between the sticks this season.

It was then reported at the end of August that Arsenal were willing to cash in on Martinez, with a price-tag of around £20m placed on the 27-year-old’s head.

The club chiefly tipped to swoop for the shot-stopper over the weeks since have been Aston Villa, with recent reports having suggested that the Villans had submitted a 2nd bid for Martinez, worth slightly in excess of £15 million.

Brighton, meanwhile, were also rumoured to have expressed an interest in the Arsenal star over the weekend. But, as per a number of reports on Sunday, it is Aston Villa who appear to have won the race for Martinez.

According to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, Villa have completed the signing of Martinez from Arsenal, with the South American have penned a contract until 2024:

Arsenal linked with Martinez replacements

Should Martinez indeed depart the Emirates, for now at least, Matt Macey appears to stand as Arsenal’s no.2.

The 26-year-old was on the bench at Fulham on Saturday, having made just two appearances for the Gunners’ senior side over the course of his long stint with the club.

However, several names are now being floated in the media as potential replacements for Martinez.

As per a recent report from the Sun, the north Londoners are believed to be willing to spend up to £10 million on Brentford’s David Raya, who would come in as Bernd Leno’s back-up.

Elsewhere, the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath suggests that Arsenal are in fact set to target Dijon’s Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson as a replacement for Martinez:
