Amapiano musician and producer DJ Maphorisa has been taken into custody following an alleged assault on his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo.

According to reports, the incident occurred at Thuli Phongolo’s residence in Sandton, Johannesburg. The former Generations: The Legacy actress lodged a complaint of assault against the popular Ba Straata hitmaker at the Sandton Police Station.

Sources revealed that the assault took place after a heated argument between the couple at a performance where DJ Maphorisa was scheduled to appear on May 6, 2023. The disagreement unfolded in front of the audience, making it a public spectacle.

After the incident, Thuli contacted her manager, who accompanied her to the Sandton Police Station to report the case of domestic violence against DJ Maphorisa. The police report documented severe bruises on Thuli’s neck as a result of the assault.

Insiders familiar with the situation claim that Thuli Phongolo and DJ Maphorisa have been experiencing a turbulent period in their relationship. This recent altercation is not the first time the couple has found themselves embroiled in a heated argument. According to an anonymous source who spoke to City Press:

“They had a fight in early December after accusations of infidelity. They had another fight last month but never got to the police station.”

Thuli Phongolo issued a statement regarding the incident, sharing her side of the story:

“On Sunday, 2023/5/7, at about 12 pm, I was at my place of residence with my boyfriend, Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known as DJ Maphorisa. I confronted him so that we could talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig.

“He became aggressive and started to punch me with his fists on my chest. He held me and took me to the balcony and grabbed me aggressively by my neck.”

DJ Maphorisa is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court later today, facing charges of assault.
