Rap icon Tupac Shakur will receive a posthumous honor with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as announced by the organization on Wednesday, May 31.
Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, Tupac’s sister, will accept the honor on his behalf on June 7 at Hollywood Boulevard. The star will be dedicated in the “Recording” category, with radio personality Big Boy serving as the event’s emcee.
In a statement, Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez recognized Tupac Shakur’s multifaceted talents, stating, “Tupac Shakur was a rapper, actor, activist, poet, and revolutionary. This iconic artist has continued to be part of the zeitgeist for decades after his passing and will continue to be an important cultural figure for many years to come.”
Martinez added, “Surely, as one of L.A.’s own, Tupac’s star will be added to the list of most visited stars.”
Tupac Shakur, known for his hit song “California Love,” tragically lost his life in 1996 at the age of 25. Despite his untimely passing, he left a profound impact on the music and film industry, influencing the hip-hop genre and garnering a global fan base. His albums “All Eyez on Me” and “Greatest Hits” achieved Diamond certification, and he sold over 75 million records worldwide.
Not limited to music, Tupac found success in the world of acting, earning critical acclaim for his roles in films such as “Juice,” “Poetic Justice,” “Above The Rim,” “Gridlock’d,” and “Gang Related.”
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Tupac Shakur was recognized as an activist, using his music and art to advocate for the rights of Black Americans.
The unveiling of Tupac’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be attended by director Allen Hughes, who recently released the docuseries “Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur” on FX and Hulu, which delves into Tupac’s life and the influence of his mother, Afeni Shakur.
Earlier this month, Oakland, California, paid tribute to Tupac by renaming a street “Tupac Shakur Way” following a unanimous decision by the city council
