Yoruba traditionalists have called out Gospel singer, Tope Alabi, urging her to identify with their beliefs and practices.
This is coming after a video of her using their traditional greeting language while ministering in church went viral.
The award-winning singer used the phrase ‘Aboru Aboye,’ which is commonly used among traditional worshippers as a form of greeting.
In response to the video, many social media users criticized her for using such words in a church setting, while others questioned her spirituality.
One user, Ccmoney, expressed disbelief, saying, “Why are people defending what they can’t? The greeting is limited to only the idol worshippers, especially the Ogboni confraternity. Aboru Aboye; then the recipient would answer Aboye Bosise. If you’re still doubting this as a Yoruba person, please try to greet your parents by saying Aboru Aboye and then come back to give me feedback.”
Another user, Olaxie, pointed out the inconsistency, saying, “She’s not supposed to use that word, but if you think she is right, then why are we not saying ‘ase’ in church instead of ‘Amen’?”
Queen Mofola raised concerns about the singer’s affiliation, saying, “She has said she’s an ‘abiye’… It’s an Ogboni title… She secretly came out of the closet! This is her first assignment. I feel sorry for Aduke… May God make your glory fade away… she should keep tagging along with Tope Alabi.”
Dejavoo made a controversial remark, suggesting that the singer used a herbalist disguised as a pastor for a specific purpose.
