Everton’s Jordan Pickford has reportedly hired bodyguards following death threats received after Merseyside derby

Pickford injures van Dijk

The first Merseyside derby of the season was played out earlier this month.

The tie held a bit more significance than normal due to Everton starting the season in fine form.

The Toffees had won their previous four league outings pre-Liverpool and were sitting pretty atop of the Premier League.

As a result, they no doubt felt confident about picking up a rare win vs their city rivals.

However, when all was said and done at Goodison Park, both sides had to settle for a share of the points.

The result was by no means the main talking point on the day, though, with Jordan Pickford’s horror tackle on Virgil van Dijk and subsequent potentially season-ending injury to the Dutchman the main topic of debate.

Pickford hires bodyguards

Pickford would somehow manage to escape any retrospective action for his challenge on VVD.

But the Everton no.1 has since been subject to a fair bit of abuse online.

It was even reported recently that police were investigating offensive tweets sent to both Pickford and Richarlison following the derby.

And Pickford, who has clearly been unsettled by this abuse, has now moved to step up security around his family.

As per the Daily Mail, the Englishman and his wife are being protected by bodyguards after the pair were subjected to death threats.

Pickford is said to have been shocked by the level of abuse he has received since the match and is determined to do whatever it takes to make sure his family are kept safe.
