Ex-Chelsea boss calls on ‘nice’ Kai Havertz to be more assertive

Havertz’s Chelsea stint

Chelsea’s marquee signing of the summer, of course, saw the Blues land Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The young German was one of the hottest prospects in the Bundesliga, and had previously earned comparisons with the likes of Michael Ballack and Mesut Ozil.

Chelsea are believed to have paid somewhere in the region of £71m to bring the midfielder to England.

However, to say that Havertz is yet to live up to the hype would be something of an understatement.

In his defence, he has been forced to deal with fitness issues, namely a bout of Covid-19, whilst injuries picked up by the likes of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech have forced the 21-year-old into less favoured positions on the pitch.

But such factors shouldn’t excuse the fact that, overall, Havertz’s displays in England thus far have proven pretty sub-par.

Hoddle on Havertz

Now, ahead of Chelsea’s meeting with West Ham later today, former Blues player and manager Glenn Hoddle has been discussing Havertz.

Hoddle revealed his opinion that the youngster is currently failing to perform at anywhere near the level he previously did at Bayer Leverkusen.

The one-time Chelsea boss, though, also assured that there is plenty more to come from Havertz, who he advised to be ‘a little bit more assertive’ moving forward:

“At the moment Havertz is not showing anywhere near the player he was showing in Germany. He is playing a bit deeper at Chelsea and I think if he starts arriving in the penalty area a bit more then we will start to see the best of him.

“He is a good player and there is more to come, but he looks like a character who needs a bit of time to settle.

“It is almost as if he just wants to be a nice player. For me, he has to be a little bit more assertive. Get himself in the box, hurt himself a little bit in the sense of his running ability to get in the box. And I think he will score goals.

“He is finding it difficult to adjust but he will get there in the end. He is still a young man and he is a good enough player to adapt to the tempo and the ferocity of the Premier League.”
