According to the Tanzania Police Force, heavy rains in nine regions of Tanzania have resulted in the deaths of at least 37 children between January and April 28.
The deaths were caused by flash floods sweeping away some of the children, while others drowned in flooded wells and ponds.
David Misime, the spokesperson for the Tanzania Police Force, urged parents and guardians to prevent children from walking away from their homes during the rains.
Misime also called on the authorities to install signs in areas that stored water, including wells and ponds.
“The Tanzania Meteorological Authority has been releasing alerts on a daily basis warning about heavy rains in different parts of the country that were likely to cause flooding with dire consequences,” Misime said in a statement issued by the police headquarters in the capital city of Dodoma.
The deaths occurred in various regions, including Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Kigoma, Mwanza, Coast, Katavi, Morogoro, and Rukwa.
The number of casualties might increase, as Tanzania is still experiencing heavy rainfall.
