The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed plots by certain political actors to introduce an interim government in Nigeria.
According to a statement by DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, the agency has identified key players behind the plot to truncate democracy after the 2023 general election.
Afunanya stated that the plot to impose an interim government is being planned through protests in the country and court orders to block the transition of power to the next government.
“The illegality is totally unacceptable in a democracy and to the peace-loving Nigerians,” Afunanya said. “Consequently, the service strongly warns those organizing to thwart democracy in the country to retract from their devious schemes and orchestrations.”
He urged media organizations, judicial authorities, and civil societies to be cautious and watchful to avoid being used as instruments to subvert peace and stability in Nigeria.
The DSS pledged to collaborate with the Transition Council and other security agencies to ensure a seamless inauguration of the next government on May 29, 2023.
President Muhammadu Buhari is set to finish his second term in office in May, and president-elect Bola Tinubu is expected to be sworn in as the next Nigeria president. Buhari has previously insisted that he does not plan to stay in office beyond the constitutional eight years.
