The passport of late President Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat, which was put up for online auction by a US-based auction house in late February, has been successfully retrieved by state authorities, Bibliotheca Alexandrina announced on Sunday.
The passport was valid from 1974 to 1981, the year when the late president was assassinated. It was used during several significant trips made by El-Sadat, including his visit to Israel in November 1977 and his 1978 trip to the US where he signed the Camp David Accords. The passport did not contain any visa stamps.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina has put the passport on display at the museum dedicated to the late president, alongside a collection of other important holdings such as the suit worn by El-Sadat during his assassination, and a collection of papers and notes written by the late president.
The family of the late president, represented by MP Karim El-Sadat – the grandson of the former president’s brother – had filed an urgent statement directed at Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and the cabinet, after it was announced that the late president’s final passport had been put up for online auction.
No details were given regarding how the passport ended up with the US-based auction house or who purchased it.
