In a continued effort to ensure the safe return of Nigerian citizens stranded abroad, the federal government, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), conducted another successful evacuation exercise.
A total of 112 stranded Nigerians were evacuated from Libya on Tuesday.
Kabiru Musa, the Charge D’Affaires En Titre of the Nigerian Mission to Libya, affirmed the government’s commitment to preventing any of its citizens from being left stranded abroad.
The evacuees, consisting of 55 men, 47 women, six children, and four infants, departed from Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport aboard a chartered flight (No. UZ01890) at 13:30 local time.
They are expected to arrive at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport on the same day.
This marks the sixth evacuation exercise conducted by the federal government this year, with nearly 5,000 Nigerians successfully evacuated from Libya thus far.
Mr. Musa expressed gratitude to the IOM and Libyan authorities for their support in facilitating the voluntary evacuation exercise.
He emphasized that as long as Nigerian citizens express their willingness to return home, the government will continue to fulfill its responsibility of ensuring their safe repatriation.
Nigeria serves as a transit country for many individuals attempting to reach Europe, resulting in thousands of Nigerians becoming stranded in Libya.
These individuals often fall victim to human trafficking, enduring harrowing experiences at the hands of their traffickers in the North African country.
