A non-governmental organisation, the United Global Resolve For Peace (UGRFP) has tasked security agencies to arrest and investigate the perpetrators of the killer of Ms Deborah Samuel who is a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto state on the 13th of May, 2022.
The group said it unequivocally condemned the extra-judicial killing of the student, who they claimed blasphemed against Prophet Muhammad.
A statement signed by the National Coordinator, Olaseni Shallom in Abuja on Friday said: “UGRFP expresses its alarm and dismay at the recurrence of such a heinous crime perpetrated by
a super-charged extremist crowd with no regard for the sanctity of human life and hereby demand an immediate investigation aimed at identifying the perpetrators for onward prosecution.
“UGRFP stresses that all forms of violence and acts of terror against fellow citizens on account of their religion or belief on account of the intolerance of another group’s religion or belief are intolerable and unjustifiable.”
Olaseni added that places of learning such as the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto state ought to be hallowed grounds for the re-education of the thoughts and whims that lead to such barbaric acts and not hotbeds for the violence of such a terrible nature, adding that Ms Deborah Samuel’s murder brings to the fore one of the most contentious issues that continue to rip at the soul of the Nigerian nation and threaten the unity of a fledgling country.
“Religious intolerance of a violent nature continues to persevere and thrive in an atmosphere of the indifference
and taciturnity by leaders of thoughts in the core north, particularly clerics who command the minds and actions of the northern mass.
“Failure to speak up against such atrocious and murderous actions is an impetus for its aggravation and escalation.
“With the Nigerian 2023 General Elections fast approaching, it is hoped that national
conversations that shape political decisions take cognizance of the need to elect unifying leaders with zero tolerance for extremism and bigotry in all its crude forms. Only honest political will wielded without bias or prejudice can forge a path to national reconciliation and healing.
“The United Global Resolve for Peace (UGRFP) further calls for mutual respect of all religions and
faiths and enjoins the public to foster a culture of peace and fraternity in its words and actions.
“We wish to also extend our condolences at UGRFP to the victim’s family even as we will continue to lead our agency and platform towards calling for the arrest and prosecution of her murderers,” the statement noted.
