The Islamic Republic of Iran and Sudan has announced that they were resuming diplomatic relations following months of talks.
The two sides announced the move in a joint statement on Monday.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Sudan have decided to resume their diplomatic relations following contacts between their high-ranking officials in recent months and in line with their national interests,” the joint statement said. “The two countries agreed to expand their friendly ties based on mutual respect to their sovereignty, equality, mutual interest and peaceful coexistence.”
It added, “The two sides agreed to deepen their ties in different areas that would serve the interests of both nations and would be conducive to regional stability.”
The statement further said, “They also agreed to take necessary measures to reopen their embassies in the near future and do necessary coordination to exchange their official delegations in order to explore ways of expanding cooperation between Tehran and Khartoum. The agreement made on October 9, 2023.”
Iran and Sudan have been in good relations in the near past but in recent years these relations were severed due to a number of bilateral and regional factors.
