A magistrate court in Kano State, Nigeria, has ordered a man to slaughter his noisy cockerel or face a penalty after two neighbours complained to the court about the bird’s loud crows disturbing their sleep and peace of the neighbourhood.

The court located at Gidan Murtala gave the order on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

One of the plaintiffs, Yusuf Muhammed, of Ja’en quarters, told the court that the cockerel’s relentless crowing was an infringement of his right to a restful sleep.

While admitting the bird’s knack for loud crows, the owner, Isyaku Shu’aibu, prayed the court to stay the judgement until April 7, 2023, which is Good Friday, as he had bought the bird to celebrate the Christian holy day and asked to be given until then before killing it for a family feast.

Yusuf Muhammed said, “I am very happy with the judgement, and I hope it will serve as a deterrent to others who might want to disturb the peace of their neighbours with noisy animals”.
