The National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, has called for enhanced diplomacy between African parliaments to boost the region’s legislation agenda, saying that Kenya and Zambia share a lot in common that could be nurtured to help realise a new Africa.
Wetang’ula made the remarks during a parliamentary diplomatic engagement with Zambian Speaker, Nelly Mutti, who paid him a courtesy call at the Parliament building.
The two speakers acknowledged the warm parliamentary relations between the two countries and committed to offer support to members of their respective Houses to engage through exchange programmes.
They suggested the formation of a Kenya-Zambia Parliamentary Friendship Group that would form the basis for further deliberation of parliamentary business and activities of the two Parliaments for mutual benefit.
During the meeting, Wetangula informed the Zambian delegation that the House Business Committee (HBC) of the National Assembly is the ultimate authority of the affairs of the House, which oversees the implementation of the House business and related programmes.
He highlighted the roles of the National Assembly, emphasising that budget making and oversight of government projects were among the cardinal duties of the August House.
Speaker Mutti indicated that the House Business Committee of Zambia is one of the four Housekeeping Committees of the National Assembly and is mandated to determine the business to be considered by the House.
The Zambian delegation included MPs Stafford Mulusa, Brian Mundubile, Stephen Kampyongo, Patriotic Front, Jay Banda, Kampamba Mulenga, Clement Andeleki, and Roy Ngulube.
