The Lagos State Government has announced the discontinuation of the 50 per cent cut on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) ride, which was introduced to mitigate the impact of the naira scarcity in the state.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the agency responsible for public transportation, stated this in a press release on Tuesday.
According to the statement, “with effect from Saturday, April 1, bus fare on all regulated buses – BRT, Standard and FLM – shall revert to 100 per cent rate.”
The reduction in fares was approved by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu on February 8, 2023, to ease the financial burden on commuters during the cash crunch caused by the recent currency swap.
However, following the Supreme Court and Federal Government’s directives on the use of old notes alongside new notes and the return of stability to the system, LAMATA said the 50% rebate would be discontinued.
In its announcement, LAMATA said that “bus fares will return to pre-50 per cent slash rate effective Saturday, April 1, 2023.”
