Chad’s President driss Déby, Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir arrived in Cairo on Wednesday to participate in Sudan Neighbouring Countries Summit upon an invitation from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a preparatory session for the summit was held in Cairo, Wednesday evening in the presence of senior officials from attending countries.

According to an Egyptian government source, the Cairo meeting of Sudan’s neighbours will examine ideas and proposals that have been brought to the table through other initiatives, including IGAD, to end the armed conflict in the country.

The leaders of Sudan’s neighbouring countries are expected to discuss mechanisms to deal with the dire humanitarian situation that resulted from the influx of thousands of Sudanese refugees into their countries since the outbreak of the conflict in mid-April.
