National Assembly’s Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works will on Wednesday undertake an inspection tour of projects in Murang’a County, Kenya.
Members of the committee will inspect Kanyenya-ini and Muthithi markets and housing projects in the county.
The Johana Ng’eno-led committee will first pay a courtesy call to Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata before embarking on the tour.
The MPs will be seeking to establish whether there was value for money in the projects. They will also assess the quality of the workmanship.
On Tuesday, the committee was in Embu county for a daylong site inspection visit of projects in the devolved unit.
During the Embu Inspection, the team visited the Affordable Housing Project, as well as fresh farm produce markets of Manyatta, Kangaru and Makutano.
Ng’eno, who spoke during the visit also attended by Embu County Governor Cecily Mbarire, noted that collaboration between the two levels of government would strategically pool resources together and eliminate potential bottlenecks in the delivery of the scheme.
“We are actually very happy to see the collaboration happening here between the State Department of Housing and the county government to achieve progress,” Ng’eno said.
However, Kangaru market residents lamented the delayed completion of the facility which was initially undertaken through the Agriculture Ministry before being handed over to the County Government.
Area MP Gitonga Mukunji (Manyatta) said the project urgently needs to be completed and expanded to ease residents’ agricultural-related trade activities.
At the Makutano Market, traders lamented about insecurity and lack of proper lighting that grind operations in the market to a halt at dusk.
