Niger’s military junta has proposed that there would be a five-year transition to constitutional rule starting from Wednesday.
The military junta made the announcement during a signing ceremony for a new transition charter.
Niger’s military junta staged a coup in 2023 and ousted civilian President Mohamed Bazoum.
Like military rulers in Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger authorities went on to kick out French and other European forces and turned to Russia for support as they battle militant groups.
The time frame announced on Wednesday was in line with recommendations made in February by a commission following national discussions.
