Nigeria has been elected to occupy a vacant seat on the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the economic arm of the United Nations, for a three-year term starting from January 1, 2024.
The decision was made during the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
Out of the 18 vacant seats in the Council, Nigeria emerged as the sole country to receive unanimous support, with all 191 Member States present in the hall voting in favor of Nigeria.
The country will serve alongside 17 other nations including France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
In a separate by-election, Türkiye was elected to a seat in the Western European and Others Group, which was previously held by Greece.
Türkiye’s term will commence on January 1, 2024, and conclude in December of the following year.
Furthermore, Member States participated in the election to fill an ongoing vacancy within the Eastern European Group.
