President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced that Ghana currently has no critical cases of Covid-19, signaling that the country has overcome the pandemic.
During his 29th address to the nation on Covid-19 updates on Sunday, May 28, 2023, President Akufo-Addo stated, “currently we do not have any critical case.”
He added, “the emergency is over, this too has passed.”
Acknowledging the cost involved in the fight against the virus, the President highlighted the expense of vaccination and the resources spent on fumigation and cleansing of public places such as markets and schools.
Despite the financial burden, Ghana was able to receive free vaccines to combat the virus.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) recently called for the removal of all Covid-19 related travel restrictions, in line with the recommendation made by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO advised countries to lift travel restrictions, citing the potential economic and social strain caused by such measures.
The organization no longer classified Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international concern.
Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General of the Health Service, justified the decision to lift restrictions, pointing to a sustained decline in Covid-19 cases in the country over the past five months.
The national Covid-19 Task Force meeting on May 17, 2023, resulted in the removal of pre-departure testing and testing at all points of entry as requirements for passengers.
Additionally, the Covid-19 health declaration form for international travelers has been suspended since May 20, 2023.
