In a shocking turn of events, an Islamic teacher in Senegal has been apprehended by the authorities on suspicion of sexually assaulting 27 female students.
The accused teacher had managed to evade capture for several weeks but ultimately surrendered himself to the police on Monday, June 5, 2023.
The disturbing accusations against the teacher surfaced earlier this year in Touba, Senegal, after a complaint was filed by the alleged victims, who provided medical certificates as evidence of the assaults.
The accused, who was an Islamic teacher at a Quranic school in Touba, stands accused of sexually assaulting students under his tutelage.
The harrowing allegations first came to light when a courageous young girl refused to return to the school after experiencing sexual abuse by the teacher.
This brave disclosure triggered a chain of revelations, implicating the teacher in the sexual abuse of multiple other girls within the same educational institution.
Following his surrender, the suspect was initially taken into custody by the Senegalese police and subsequently handed over to the gendarmerie, a military force responsible for security and policing in Senegal.
The gendarmerie will oversee further legal proceedings against the accused.
While the exact dates of the alleged crimes and the ages of the victims have not been disclosed, it has been reported that a majority of the victims were under the age of 15.
In light of these distressing revelations, the Quranic school associated with the accused teacher has been closed to ensure the safety and well-being of its students.
