Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan said he felt a sense of vindication, following Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s impeachment.

He said Mkhwebane misused her office as “part of a political campaign”.

Gordhan was reacting to Mkhwebane’s impeachment by the National Assembly, where he joined 317 members of Parliament (MPs) who voted for her removal.

He was implicated in Mkhwebane’s investigation report into the South African Revenue Service (Sars) rogue unit, which was later overturned by the court.

The Section 194 inquiry, during its hearings, heard how Mkhwebane called Gordhan a “threat to democracy” during her investigation into the Sars rogue unit.

Mkhwebane also said Gordhan violated the Executive Members’ Ethics Code by misleading the National Assembly when he failed to disclose that he met with a member of the Gupta family.

Gordhan said they could draw a lesson from her impeachment.

“We will all draw lessons about the calibre of people we appoint.”

Gordhan said unlike those she implicated, Mkhwebane had a fair chance in the Section 194 inquiry to put her case forward.
