Bolt drivers in Nigeria have declared a three-day nationwide strike to push for higher bonuses and fares.
The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria, representing the drivers, made the announcement during a press briefing in Calabar.
Mike Neji, the group’s Treasurer and Chairman of the task force assigned to enforce the strike, criticized the treatment of union members by the management of the app-based company, deeming it “unfair.”
Neji highlighted that the demand for fare and bonus adjustments was prompted by the recent hike in petrol prices and the subsequent increase in spare parts’ costs.
He specifically mentioned the unfavorable terms and conditions imposed on Bolt drivers in Calabar, stating that the location suffered the most compared to other areas where the company operates.
As a result of the fuel price increase, the drivers find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.
They are urging management to raise the fare to a minimum of N1,000 as a baseline and to reduce the commission they collect from drivers, which currently stands at around 35% when combined with other charges.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Neji criticized the company for only adding a nominal amount of around N1,000 to the fare, which does not align with the prevailing realities.
If their demands are not met, the group may explore alternative options.
Efforts to obtain a response from the company’s officials in Calabar were unsuccessful, as it was stated that only the head office has the authority to address such matters.
